We rented this movie “Sweeney Todd” and I sketched the case cover. I really liked the cinematography of the movie. I try to sketch from reference as much as possible, it really helps to stay in practice. This sketch in particular is a value drawing and it is approached in the same way that an under painting is when painting in any media, be it traditional or other. When drawing in this manner the image does not progress as a line drawing does, but rather shapes are blocked in as they would be with a paint brush. Not relying on line to deduce chiaroscuro but rather light and dark values. In life when we perceive an edge of an object in 3D space it usually is not as a line, as we see in comic books and animations; instead it is change in values that form a line.
