I f you are in a band and play the drums then you might be interested in this service. I have painted a few drum skins, and after which I was invited to the show. Airbrushed drum skins definately bring alittle visual stability to the show, and the musicans all told me that there was no difference to the precusion sound. I paint the drum skins the same way I airbrush guitars, all automotive urethane flake base coat with layers of candy color lightly airbrushed onto the surface topped with a light clearcoat.

This is the first stage of the mural, I pretty much just used some automotive blue fine line to mask off the black sealer/primer, then started airbrushing lemon yellow flake in squiggleing lines resembleing wood grain. I first was this visual effect in an airbrush action magazine published in the mid 90′s. The article was written a very talented airbrush artist Craig Frazer. If you are thinking about getting into airbrushing I strongly recomend his book, “Cheap Tricks and Specail Effects”.

At this piont I start laying down the opaque cream color on top of the wood design and started flushing out the forefront design. The trisck is to layer the design on really thin and build up the color. For those of you who do airbrush or have tried to airbrush and had problems, trie to thin out the color a little more. Somtimes I just add a few drops of actual color to the reducer. By the way I have had the best success useing a medium reducer, in this case House of Kolor RU-311.

After the white design is painted continue with an inter-coat clear with candy color and keep building up the design. This design was painted from a tattooo that the drummer had on his back. I just took a photograph of the tattoo and painted it free hand. With all the flake in the base coat the stage lights made the mural sparkle and shimmer, awwe yeah…. A star is born.
