This is a matching game that I made using actionscript3. It is just like the old memory game except I used my artwork. I wanted to use art that had the same subject matter so the game seemed cohesive. Lucky for me I had been creating this type of work for the last few years. This code was modified by altering the size of the art tiles to that they can be better observed.

delemia2010

Dilemma 2010 was a sketch that I drew for the CG Drawing Jam, “Odd Couple” contest hosted by CGHUB.com. It was based on my very first painting on canvass that I painted over 10 years ago by the same name. What greater “odd couple” I thought, so I spent a few hours sketching it up from scratch. This sketch was also a great chance to get some practice using Autodesk Sketchbook Pro 2010. I save some WIPs so that the process could be shared with all of you. Granted, this was only a sketch using digital media, first in Autodesk’s Sketchbook Pro 2010, and finished in Adobe Photoshop, so it was completed in less than 3 hours. I could spend just as much time on this image as I did painting the original, but I have come to learn in the last decade that when it comes to my work, less is truly more. It is really interesting when I think about the differences between the two paintings. The original was tweaked for over 6 months and was not very enjoyable toward completion. I meticulously painted and repainted, scraped away paint with a razor blade, and I began with this work, my own approach to traditional painting. With all of this being said from a concept artist’s stand point it is not much different from the digital sketch. I didn’t use reference for Dilemma 2010 so it seems to have more character and charm; the colors are more dramatic and loose. The content does not change, it is still an angel and some fish dude that for some reason or another are very close. It was a lot of to experiment with the same subject in a different medium, something that I do quite frequently.

I am starting a series of painting that are going to relate to, or focus on, the windmills that populate the Iowa countryside. This particular windmill is a Dutch replica that is attached to a museum in Elk Horn Iowa. The style of this structure is a very charming and interesting. The reference shots that I used for this subject were taken at the foot of the structure looking up.

Struggleing Social Anomaly

Social anomaly is the name of the artist shackled to social expectations. In this group of paintings I am working on, I will continue to explore this topic. The idea in Social Anomaly Struggling for Freedom is that they, the artist, are blanketed and shackled around the neck to conceal their identity, but every time they reach to unbuckle the binding their most vulnerable parts are exposed. The central figure is pulling her blanket down to cover her mid-section. Note the shadows on the ground. They are symbols of the figure’s social expectations and are a reoccurring theme in the Social Anomaly series. The central two figures, the female social anomaly and little boy, cast shadows of their social expectations as the suited spectator judges the situation. The shadow of the struggling social anomaly was left out of the image as he exposes himself to escape his bondage. This particular painting was painted with oil and used sketches for reference; not life. This explains the odd juxtaposition of objects in the painting. Click on the image in the gallery read about the development of this painting.

We rented this movie “Sweeney Todd” and I sketched the case cover. I really liked the cinematography of the movie. I try to sketch from reference as much as possible, it really helps to stay in practice. This sketch in particular is a value drawing and it is approached in the same way that an under painting is when painting in any media, be it traditional or other. When drawing in this manner the image does not progress as a line drawing does, but rather shapes are blocked in as they would be with a paint brush. Not relying on line to deduce chiaroscuro but rather light and dark values. In life when we perceive an edge of an object in 3D  space it usually is not as a line, as we see in comic books and animations;  instead it is change in values that form a line.

dutch pallet pin-up17This painting was an attempt to paint a painting using a Dutch painter’s pallet. The colors I used were from a few different Rembrandt paintings. I ended up with an interesting portrait of a modern subject. Of the subjects portrayed most by Dutch painters I was of course drawn to their landscapes and portraits of their women. I went with the portrait of a woman, I chose this subject because of it’s modern feel. The approach to the painting was more related to the French Academy than the Dutch technique. I believe I am on to something here. In traditional painting the act of painting in gray scale to complete the paintings values then adding colored glazes is called Grisaille. notice blow that the colored images don’t start untill the third one back. Most of the work is shape, form, and chiaroscuro.

This is a pile of photos stacked on top of each other used to create a unifying image. The monster is just a pile of tractor and tech parts images that I found on the internet. Composed together they form a scene that is very interesting and provoking.

This was a class project still life. Special thanks to Mike Grion from Bellevue University for the set up. This sketch took about 3 hours start to finish. And was a week two exercise in my digital imaging class. Using a tablet and digitally painting is something that I find remarkable. Nailing down a solid work flow is what I am after here by experimenting with several Photoshop  tools. I don’t have it down yet but I am on my way.
