Oil Paint Gallery

The oil portraits I paint are usually more vivid and lively than other mediums. I like them bright, and use more of an impasto style when I paint them. Impasto is a technique where the paint is applied thick and heavy, similar to the way the impressionist used oils over a hundred years ago. I like to use very bright colors next to its complementary color to make the viewer feel like the painting is alive with color. Because of this approach, I have usually been commissioned to paint musicians and actors this way. If oil and realism is what you want, that is not a problem. I can paint as real in oil as I can in watercolor or any other medium listed on this website, so check out those galleries too. |

Painting fantasy scenes with oil paint is a lot of fun and a great experience. These works were painted from sketches that were drawn years earlier. Ideas long forgotten often emerge on canvass later from old ideas. Painting in oil takes longer for me than other mediums. All though using a accelerator instead of linseed oil does speed up the process. When I stand back a look at one of my oil paintings there is something unmistakably tangible happening. Sure, illustrating digitally is faster and offers the end customer more control, but an oil painting on a great big canvass is majestically permanent. |
The Painting a above, “Dilemma” was the very first painting I ever painted on canvass, and I wrote an article about it here. I will no doubt paint many more fantasy oil paintings in my life when I settle down a little, but for now I have these paintings available as prints here. I wrote an article about the painting in the middle of the evolution of an elephant, “Free Ride”. |

Oil landscape can be any size and are often painted with out commission and sold at shows. However, if there is particular sized canvass that you have in mind for a specific area in your business or home, or a certain type of scene that you want painted alone, or in a series. Gather details, images, and your ideas, send them to me via e-mail and we can work out the details so you will get exactly what you want. I would like to paint more oil landscapes in the future but thus far I have only painted them for purely academic purposes to compare my process in different mediums, experiments in media.
