Pastel Gallery

flowers6 When working from life I often use pastels because they are quick and dry. I have been using pastels for decades, and have left chalky fingerprints all over every home I have ever lived in. When I thinking of a still life to paint, I try to pick a similar scenes for more than just one painting, this type series would be great if there is wall space in your business, office, or home, that could use several smaller paintings to freshen up dull rooms. Like everything else I offer complete control to the client, any subject, theme, or idea is possible.

Pastels for me are more of a fleshing out medium I use primarily when painting from life. But on occasion I do use them to paint illustrated images from imagination. Pastels were the very first medium introduced to me and I will always use them when quick but dry sketches are required.

Nothing beats sitting in mosquito infested weeds drawing the land right in front of my eyes. I do like get out and away from everything to draw and paint out doors, but the ease and accessibility of my studio just can’t be packed up and hauled around with me very easily so usually reference photos due quite nicely. Using pastels is second nature to me and I love the results I get when I use them. Pastels are the quickest, therefore least expensive commissioned medium in my arsenal.

All of these drawings with painted from live models at the Rocky Mountain Collage of Art and Design. They were drawn in timed poses that ranged from less than a minute to 10 minutes. I loved to start the day with a cup of coffee and the smell chalky newsprint. traditional figure

Painting portraits with pastels was the only way I painted portraits through high school. I don’t have any photos of the work I did back then and I would like the accept commissions for portraits specifically in pastel so that I can build my portfolio strength in this department. If you are considering a portrait but want something that would take less time than the watercolor or oil paint, then maybe we can help each other out. The only draw back to having a pastel painting commissioned is that the work
is very fragile. I will mount it to foam board and put clear shrink wrap over it, but it will need matted and framed to be properly shown.
