pencil drawings
Drawing from life is fun but I love to get my imagination pumped with pulp, and off the hook of reality. Working from my head out is gets me where I want to be artistically, that is, to tell a story with an image is what I love the most about art. I have a lot more work like this that I will be posting in the short future. Most of these drawings were included because I have been experimenting with texture, foreshortening, and elongated proportion to suggest a more dramatic scene for the viewer. Some of these drawings have already become paintings, check some of the other digital illustrations.
Pencil is the root of creation for me. My work flow whether it be digital, oil,
watercolor, or whatever else type of project I get my self in, starts with thumb nails. Which little drawings about an inch by 2 inches. I try to draw about 6-10 of these, not spending too much time on any of them. After I have some choice I choose the most interesting one and start a sketch. It is important to differentiate the deference between a “sketch” and a “drawing”. A sketch is a record of information that can be used to create an image of higher detail or different media. A drawing on the other hand is likely to be a more polished image, complete line work, contrast, and graduated shading.
When I am painting a portrait or a wildlife piece it is often a good idea to do a few drawing studies, and for a few good reasons, first off, anatomy. If anatomy is off in what is supposed to be a true to life artwork then it is absolutely necessary to familiarize myself with the subject’s build and structure. When an artist studies art academically one of the very first suggested classes is “Life Drawing”, where the student draws a live model in a number of poses. drawing from life is allot different than drawing a photo of someone posing. I think the point of this class is to become familiar with the human anatomy.
And although this was my goal when I was in the class, many of my life drawings seam to be weak in the area of anatomy. The quick poses did however produce very beautiful figurative work.
When I find a subject that I like to draw I fill a few pages of my scethc book and move on. I have a mild obsession about the subject of the necromancer “Faust”.
